Barely out of school, he packs his bag for that long, long journey
That leads him to a world far away.
Leaving behind all he knew, and all that he had,
And his family hopes and prays, that he’ll come back okay.
Trusts in his heart to do what’s right, serving God and countrymen.
Another son and father off to fight, in someone else’s war again.

Would you give your life, for a whole nation or just a few,
For someone you never even talked to,
For someone you never knew existed?
Would you give your life, for others to be free some day,
For others to live in peace or pray,
Like you and I can do... every day?

I can’t imagine how it feels,
To put yourself on the line like they do.
Not seeking fame or glory, it almost seems surreal.
The risks are high, and the rewards so few.
When he awoke that morning, he didn’t know it would be his last.
Saving a little boy’s life - not his own - it just happened that fast.

Would you give your life, for a whole nation or just a few,
For someone you never even talked to,
For someone you never knew existed?
Would you give your life, for others to be free some day,
For others to live in peace or pray,
Like you and I can do... every day?

Time after time, a young man walks through fire and ice.
Always a hero, and sometimes paying the ultimate price.

Would you give your life, for a whole nation or just a few,
For someone you never even talked to,
For someone you never knew existed?
Would you give your life, for others to be free some day,
For others to live in peace or pray,
Like you and I can do... every day... every day?

Songwriter's Notes: A poignant song that was inspired by the courageous 29 year old U.S. Army Sgt. Dennis Weichel, killed in Afghanistan in 2012. This tune is dedicated to all the heroes who gave their lives to preserve our freedom, to our military veterans, and to those who actively serve. The musical style fluctuates between a mellow, picking acoustic guitar in the verses, and electric guitar power chords in the chorus.
