I’ll never ever walk away

When I was ten years old back in Springfield
My only ambition was to go out and play
Then one day my world turned upside down
When Daddy chose to walk away

Tough times, but thank God we got by
I still remember what my Mama would say
“One day you’ll be all grown up
And a good father, I pray”

As the next few years passed by
I knew I had to find my way

Was seventeen when I first met Cindy
We hung out every day after school
And all the other kids we knew
Thought we were so cool

One day she packed up and left for college
Never bothered to say goodbye
She left me feeling like a fool
For days I did nothing but cry

Winter break she called to meet up
But then she changed her mind

People move in and out of my life
But I’ll never ever be that way
I’m happy to be ‘round the ones I love
I’ll never ever walk away

No matter what, the past remains
Forever locked in yesterday

Now I’m blessed to be around the ones I love
I’ll never ever walk away
I’ll never ever walk away

Even today, I’m in for the long haul
Through ups and down, sure I could leave or stay
There’s still one thing you can count on
I’ll never ever walk away

People move in and out of my life
But I’ll never ever be that way
I’m happy to be ‘round the ones I love
I’ll never ever walk away

No matter what, the past remains
Forever locked in yesterday

Now I’m blessed to be around the ones I love
I’ll never ever walk away
I’ll never ever walk away
I’ll never ever walk away

Songwriter's Notes: Despite experiencing childhood problems and issues of abandonment growing up, the subject of this song becomes an adult, and vows to be a responsible father and family man. Acoustic guitar in the verses, followed by overdriven power chords in the chorus are a good fit for the song’s emotional lyrics.
