Road that Leads Back Home

I could’ve been a doctor or a lawyer,
Or maybe a banker, with a striped, red tie.
That wouldn’t be me; I got blood of a gypsie,
And I just couldn’t keep living a lie.

The day after I left high school,
I packed my pickup,
Headed for palm trees and a tan.
It didn’t take too long to see the big picture.
Looked in the mirror and asked, “Who’s that man?”

It seems I’ve wasted too much time,
Now I’m just trying to find
The road that leads back home
(the road that leads back home.)

Chasing dreams that don’t exist.
Empty hands, so much I missed.
And now I’m all alone.

Another highway to another town,
Ain’t no use in even hanging around.

I miss the man I used to be.
He’s somewhere waiting for me.
On the road that leads back home
(the road that leads back home)
The road that leads back home
(the road that leads back home.)

Thought it was time for me to be someone different
And try to forget all I knew.
When I thought I finally got it all figured,
I realized I didn’t have a clue.

Every now and then I want you back again.
I wish you never, ever let me go.
Tossed around like a ship lost in a hurricane,
It’s the price I pay for leaving you, you know.

It seems I’ve wasted too much time,
Now I’m just trying to find
The road that leads back home
(the road that leads back home.)

Chasing dreams that don’t exist.
Empty hands, so much I missed.
And now I’m all alone.

Another highway to another town,
Ain’t no use in even hanging around.

I miss the man I used to be.
He’s somewhere waiting for me.
On the road that leads back home

The road that leads back home.
The road that leads back home.
It seems I’ve wasted too much time,
Now I’m just trying to find
The road that leads back home
(the road that leads back home.)

Chasing dreams that don’t exist.
Empty hands, so much I missed.
And now I’m all alone.

Another highway to another town,
Ain’t no use in even hanging around.

I miss the man I used to be.
He’s somewhere waiting for me.
On the road that leads back home
(the road that leads back home)
The road that leads back home
(the road that leads back home.)
(repeat & fade)

Songwriter's Notes: Looking back at one’s life is always a mixed bag - including both fond memories and regrets. The song is about trying to find the way back to a happier time. Prominent electric guitars are featured in this song.
